FAQ

The Midland RC Modelers Club is dedicated to sharing our hobby with others. The club has an active instructor program where certified instructors help the newcomer learn to fly. Some of the common questions about aeromodeling are answered below:

Is aeromodeling expensive?
The typical startup cost is approximately $300 to $500. Your first engine, radio and support equipment can be used in other aircraft as your ability progresses.

Can I try flying before I spend that much money?
Perspective members are welcome to visit the club field throughout the flying season for a complimentary flying lesson, providing an instructor is on site. The AMA Introductory Pilot Program permits students to fly with an instructor for up to 60 days before joining the AMA.

What is the AMA?
AMA is the Academy of Model Aeronautics. It is the chartering organization for more than 2500 model airplane clubs across the country. The AMA provides its members and chartered clubs with liability insurance and other valuable services.  In 2021 the AMA dues for an adult under age 65 are $75, and $65 for those age 65 and over .

How hard is it to learn to fly?
It is difficult (and usually expensive) to learn to fly without proper instruction. The club is dedicated to teaching students to fly.  Club instructors typically use a “buddy box” system with an override so they can save the students plane when they get into trouble.

How long does it take to learn?
The amount of time it will take you to learn to fly is hard to predict. Time to solo can take from a few weeks to an entire flying season. It will depend on the students ability and hand-eye coordination and the frequency of their instruction. Many newcomers can reduce learning time by working on a RC simulator.

What equipment should I buy?
A good trainer plane is recommended for learning to fly. These planes have a high wing and a flat bottom airfoil for stable flight and slow take-offs and landings. Slow flying electric planes can also be used. Trainers are not as pretty as that P-51 but will serve the student well when they are learning to fly. It is recommend to talk to a club instructor or experienced member before buying equipment.  A good hobby shop can also help with the selection of proper equipment.

Do I need to build a plane before I can fly?
Many flyers build their planes from kits but good “almost ready to fly” (ARF) kits are also available. ARF’s reduce the amount of time it takes to build a plane. Often, good used equipment is available from club members.

How can I join the club?
Individuals interested in joining the club are invited to fill out the application linked below.  They can then bring the application to a monthly meeting to give to the treasurer, along with their dues.  All club members must also have AMA membership to fly at the club flying field.  Details on AMA membership can be found on-line.

The MRCMC club dues for 2023 are $30 for those age 18-65 and there is also a $30 annual mowing fee, which can be refunded in part or in full if members mow the field with club-owned mowing equipment.
